rdSplatTools Tutorial 2.11 – Mixing rdSplat Layer Values for complex results
Last Updated: 12th October 2026
Tutorial created using rdSplatTools version 1.00
It can be more efficient to combine the values of multiple rdSplat Layers than to add extra layers – for example, if you have a wave crashing area painted along your coast with a falloff gradient to align and fade the sound – you can paint a binary (on/off) mask over the water – binary masks are very memory efficient. Then, you can take the maxium value of the coast layer and the ocean layer and you have a water layer that fades in around the coast.
Step 1. Create a Basic level
Create a Basic level, delete the floor and add a default landscape.
Add a material to the landscape with a grass and water layer (similar to Tutorial 2.4) and paint a coast area and ocean.
Step 2. Create the 2 layer rdSplat
Now go to rdSplatTools Edit Mode and add a new layer so there are 2 in total – paint the coast line in layer 1, add a falloff of 128.0 – then paint the ocean with layer 2 in binary mode, no fall-off. Save.
Step 3. Edit the ThirdPerson BP
Add the code below to the BeginPlay event:
And add this code to the Tick:
Step 4. Done
Now Play the level and watch the layer and combined values that log as you approach and enter the water.
